Emory Volleyball Closes Out Classic With Two Saturday Victories

The Emory University volleyball team capped of a successful weekend on Saturday with a pair of wins on the final day of the Emory Classic.  The Eagles swept both Greensboro College (25-8, 25-16, 25-21) and Covenant College (25-15, 25-19, 25-19), raising their season mark to 5-0.

Emory used a balanced attack in the decision over Greensboro, led by senior Tara Martin's six kills and .500 hitting mark (6-0—12). Freshmen Alana Dawson and Carly Wallace each contributed five successful attack attempts with Wallace adding four digs and five of the team's 10 service aces.  The Eagles posted a .290 hitting (32-12—69) performance compared to the Pride's showing of -.080 (17-23—75), the fourth straight foe to hit a negative percentage against Emory. 

In the weekend finale, Martin topped all players with 11 kills, turning in an attack percentage of .417 (11-1—24), while contributing nine digs.  Dawson, along with classmate Madison Cail, were next up on the team's score sheet with eight terminations, with Dawson hitting .400 and Cail .278.  Freshman Lily Martin hit .294 on the strength on seven kills and two miscues in 17 swings.  Junior setter Cassie Srb finished with 39 digs and added four aces to aid in the cause.  For the match Emory hit .354 (45-10—99), its second-highest outing of the young, season, while Covenant hit .149 (27-14—87).  The Eagles held a 42-36 advantage in digs, keyed by freshman Deborah Hong's game-high 16, and enjoyed a 7-2 edge in total blocks.

Martin was named MVP of the Emory Classic, averaging 2.5 kills and 2.3 digs per set. Martin hit a solid .435 (30-3—62) over the four matches and totaled a pair of double-figure kills contests.  Other Emory representatives included Srb, whose 9.70 assists per set average helped the Eagles hit .334 over the weekend, and Hong, who registered a 3.92 digs per game average.

Emory returns to action next Friday when it travels to Thousand Oaks, California, to compete at the East-West Battle.  The Eagles will meet No. 1-ranked Trinity (Texas) at 2:15 (EDT) and No. 18 Saint Benedict at 6:45 pm.  On Saturday, Emory will matchup against No. 10 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
