Emory Volleyball Wins Two Friday Matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Emory University volleyball team opened play at its weekend Classic on Friday by registering a pair of wins.  The Eagles ran their record to 3-0 following sweeps of Brevard College (25-9, 25-14, 25-12) and Willamette University (25-22, 25-18, 25-11).

In the nightcap against the Bearcats of Willamette, Emory posted a hitting mark of .266 (38-8—105) while limiting the visitors to an effort of -.027, the third time in as many outings this year that the opposition ended a match with a negative mark in that category.  WU held a slight 54-51 edge in digs while the Eagles flexed their muscles at the net, racking up nine total blocks to Willamette's one.  Senior Tara Martin pounded out a team-high 10 kills to pace the offensive attack, hitting .400 in the process, while freshmen Madison Cail and Alana Dawson each totaled seven terminations with Cail hitting .545 (7-1—11) and Dawson .500 (7-1—12).  Junior setter Cassie Srb doled out 30 assists and tied for the team lead with three total blocks. Freshman Deborah Hong led all players with 17 digs.

Emory breezed past Brevard in its opening encounter of the day, closing out the contest with a hitting performance of .423 (40-10—71).  Thirteen different Eagles accounted for at least one kill with freshman Lily Martin producing a team-leading 11 and finishing with a blistering hitting effort of .600 (11-2—15). Dawson was next on the team's score sheet with six successful attack attempts. Freshman setter Sarah Luong aided in the victory by dishing out 21 assists and notching with eight digs in her two sets of action. Holding a 13-12 edge in the third set and with Wallace serving, Emory closed out the game on a 12-0 run with Martin pocketing three kills and Wallace doling out a pair of service aces to go along with one termination to highlight the run.

The Eagles close out play at the Emory Classic on Saturday when it meets up with Greensboro College at 12:30 pm and Covenant College at 3:00 pm.
