Emory Men's Tennis Wins UAA Championships Opener

The No. 2-ranked Emory men's tennis team enjoyed a successful opening match in the quarterfinal round of the University Athletic Association Championships, defeating New York University.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 14-6 following an 8-1 decision over the Violets who fell to 3-8. The Championships are being held in Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Emory, the No. 1 seed in the Championships, notched wins in two of the three doubles matches with the No. 1 senior duo of Alex Ruderman and Ian Wagner coming away with an 8-4 triumph over Sidd Thangirala and Billy Smithline, raising their spring record to 11-6 (18-7 overall).  Junior Rafe Mosetick and freshman David Omsky kept up their winning ways at third doubles, rolling to an 8-3 outcome against CJ Leong and Matt DeMichiel.  Mosetick and Omsky now stand 16-2 in doubles action this spring (14-1 at No. 3).

The Eagles won all six singles encounters in straight sets.  Ruderman bested Thangirala, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 1 post while senior Eric Halpern upended CJ Leong at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3.  Mosetick and senior Ian Wagner emerged victorious at Nos. 3 & 4, respectively, while sophomores Josh Goodman (6-0, 6-3 vs. DeMichiel at No. 5) and Aman Manji (6-1, 6-2 vs. Karan Goyal) accounted for the other wins.

Emory will meet fifth seed and No. 13-ranked Chicago in Saturday's semifinals with that match slated for a 2:00 p.m. start.  The Maroons, 15-4 overall, battled to a 6-3 triumph over No. 4 seed Case Western Reserve in the quarterfinals.
