No. 12 Emory Men's Basketball Rolls To Home Victory Over Carnegie Mellon

Box Score

Senior Alex Foster scored 16 points and the Emory men's basketball team used a strong first-half effort in registering a Sunday afternoon victory over Carnegie Mellon University.  The Eagles upped their overall record to 13-3 (3-2 UAA) following a 79-53 decision over the Tartans who fell to 10-6 overall, 1-4 in the league.

Emory finished the contest shooting 39.7 percent (27-of-68) from the floor while holding CMU to 22.9 percent (11-of-48), a season low by an Emory opponent.  The Tartans did finish with a 41-39 edge on the glass, but were hampered by 24 turnovers that the Eagles generated into 27 points.

In addition to Foster's 16 points, senior Michael Florin and freshman Donald Avant registered double-figure scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively.   Sophomore Jonathan Terry totaled nine points while senior Josh Schattie contributed eight points and a team-leading six rebounds.  All 15 Emory players saw action with 11 scoring and 12 finding their way into the rebounding column.

Emory took command of the game midway through the first half,  holding the visiting Tartans scoreless for almost seven minutes while rattling off 19 consecutive points that morphed a six-point advantage into a 32-7 bulge with 5:49 left in the stanza. Foster scored the first 10 points of the run, finishing the opening 20 minutes with 14 points on six-of-13 field goal shooting that saw him knock down a pair of three pointers.  After a pair of free throws by Carnegie Mellon ended its scoring drought, the Eagles closed out the half on an 11-2 spurt to go into the break with a 43-11 lead.   Florin and Terry each scored seven points in the opening 20 minutes with Terry grabbing five rebounds.  Emory shot 39.5 percent from the floor (17-of-43) in the half while CMU converted just two of its 20 opportunities, and did not record a field goal over the final 12:04 of the half.  CMU was hampered by 18 first-half turnovers that Emory parlayed into 18 points.

The Eagles return to action on Friday (Jan. 30) when they play at Brandeis University.
