Emory Men's Basketball Drops UAA Home Contest To Carnegie Mellon

Box Score

Senior Jake Davis led five double-figure scorers with 30 points but it wasn't enough as the Emory men's basketball team dropped a Friday evening decision at home to Carnegie Mellon University.  The Eagles saw their record slip to 9-4 overall (1-1 UAA) following a 95-83 setback to the Tartans who upped their record to 8-5 (1-1 UAA).

Davis sank 10 field goals in 25 attempts and was successful on seven-of-nine from the foul line en route to posting his third contest of 30 or more points this year and fourth of his career.  Davis also tied junior Alex Foster for team honors with seven rebounds.  Senior McPherson Moore added 14 points on the night while junior Michael Florin chipped in 13 points.  Sophomore Davis Rao (12 pts.) and Foster (11 pts.) rounded out the team's double-digit scorers.

Carnegie Mellon used a strong second half in coming away with the win, outscoring the Eagles by a 61-48 margin over the final 20 minutes of action.  The Tartans hit on 54.5 percent (18-of-33) of their field goal attempts in the second half and made good use of their free throw opportunities, knocking down 22-of-26.  For the game, CMU outshot Emory from the floor, 46.8 percent (29-of-62) to 40.0 percent (28-of-70), and finished with an 83.3 percent effort (30-of-36) from the stripe while Emory converted 20-of-30 tries.  Senior Christian Manoli spearheaded the CMU scoring attack with a game-high 32 points, 19 in the second half, hitting seven-of-13 from the floor and 18-of-21 from the foul line.  Asad Meghani totaled 19 points, and freshman Jack Serbin helped the visitors to a 49-30 edge in rebounding by snagging a game-high 14 boards.

After trailing by one point at halftime, CMU opened the second half on a 10-3 spurt, the final six points coming from Manoli, to stake itself to a 44-38 lead.  The Tartans led by a 48-43 count before triples by Davis and Moore, followed by a bucket from Moore, sparked an 8-0 run that put the Eagles up by a 51-48 margin with 13:38 on the clock.  Over the next nine minutes, the game was nip-and-tuck with six ties and six lead changes.  A basket by Rao gave Emory a 73-72 edge with 4:14 left but six unanswered CMU points allowed the Tartans to claim a 78-73 lead.  A layup by Florin drew the Eagles to within three points with 3:01 on the clock but the Tartans upped their cushion to seven points with 2:23 left after a basket by Meghani.  From there, the closest Emory would get was five points as CMU scored its final 11 points from the stripe over the final 1:57 of the game.

Emory returns to action on Sunday when it entertains Case Western in a noon start.
