Emory Men's Basketball Falls In Overtime At Oglethorpe

Box Score

The senior tandem of Jake Davis and McPherson Moore combined for 50 points but it wasn't enough as the Emory men's basketball team came out on the short end of a tough overtime decision at Oglethorpe University Monday evening.  The Eagles saw a five-game winning streak come to an end and record drop to 6-3 as they suffered a 97-86 setback to the Stormy Petrels who raised their slate to 9-1.

Davis paced the Emory scoring attack, converting 10-of-26 from the floor, including four triples in nine tries, en route to picking up his sixth contest of 20 or more points this season.  Moore connected on seven field goals in 14 attempts and drained all eight of his opportunities from the stripe in totaling a career-high 24 points.  Junior Josh Schattie rounded out Emory's double-digit scorers with 11 points while tying for game honors and registering his first double-double with a career-high 11 rebounds.

Emory faced an 11-point deficit with 16:45 left in regulation as Oglethorpe opened the second half on an 11-2 run. The Eagles bounced back with a 16-4 barrage with Davis and Moore accounting for five and four points, respectively, to take a 57-56 edge with 13:13 on the clock.  After a bucket by OU's Drew Patrick gave the hosts a 65-64 lead, Emory rattled off seven unanswered points, a basket by Will Trawick, a three-point play by Moore and a jumper by Davis, to stake itself to a 71-65 lead with 5:53 on the clock.  A make at the stripe by Schattie enabled Emory to stay in front by a 76-71 margin with 3:30 remaining but it wouldn't score over the remainder of regulation as the Petrels hit five free throws over the final 2:20 to send the game into an extra session.

In overtime, a bucket by Schattie off a nice dish from Michael Florin, tied the score at 82-82 with 2:26 on the clock.  However, Patrick scored six straight points that pushed the Stormy Petrels to a six-point edge.  After a bucket by Davis cut the gap to four points, Patrick scored four points in a 5-0 Petrel spurt that stretched their lead to nine points with 36 seconds left.  Patrick ended the game leading all scorers with 38 points, hitting 12-of-19 from the floor and all 11 attempts from the foul line.  Tyler Courson added 25 points for Oglethorpe.

Emory shot just 33.3 percent from the floor (29-of-87) while Oglethorpe posted a 50.8 percent (33-of-65) mark.  The Eagles held a huge 53-39 advantage on the glass, 29-8 on the offensive end.

In a back-and-forth first half, Emory used a 16-2 run, six points coming from Schattie, to claim a 19-6 lead with 11:18 left in the stanza.  Oglethorpe responded with 11 unanswered points, the last five by Courson, to draw to within a 19-17 count.  A pair of buckets by Jake Davis, sandwiched around a three pointer by Davis Rao, accounted for a 7-0 Eagle spurt that put them ahead, 26-17 with 7:23 remaining.  However, Emory saw the host Petrels rattle off a 17-3 run, keyed by Drew who scored six of his 15 first-half points in that stretch, to claim a 34-29 lead with 2:05 on the clock.  McPherson Moore and Davis then recorded five points each over the duration of the half to draw Emory to within two points, 41-39, at the break.  Davis picked up 15 points to pace the Emory scoring attack while Moore added 10 points.

Tonight's game closed out Emory's slate of games for the calendar year.  The Eagles return to action on Jan. 3 when they host Piedmont College.
