Greven's 22 Points Sparks Emory Men's Basketball To Win Over Chicago

Box Score

Senior Alex Greven totaled a game-high 22 points and the Emory men's basketball bounced back from a Friday evening disappointment in impressive fashion on Sunday, earning a decisive victory over the University of Chicago.  The Eagles raised their overall record 9-4, 1-2 in the University Athletic Association following a 79-48 verdict over the Maroons who slipped to 7-7 overall, 1-2 in the league.

Greven sank eight-of-15 from the floor, including a pair of three-point field goals, in recording his 12th double-figure scoring performance of the season and fourth of 20 or more points.  Junior Jake Davis added 12 points while senior Michael Friedberg rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with 10 points.  Greven and junior McPherson Moore paced the squad's effort of the glass with seven rebounds apiece.

Emory ended the afternoon shooting 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the floor compared to Chicago's 22.8 percent (13-of-57).  The Eagles were solid from the charity stripe, knocking down 17-of-21 including a pair from Moore who ran his streak to 25 straight from the foul line.   Emory enjoyed hefty 50-32 cushion on the glass.

Emory turned up the heat on the defensive of the floor and blasted out to a 31-6 lead with 3:25 left in the first half as the Maroons connected on just two of their first 25 field goal attempts.  Led by Greven's 14 points and eight points by Friedberg, Emory enjoyed a 37-13 cushion at halftime. By the time the teams had gone into the intermission, Emory had drained 43.8 percent from the field (14-of-32) compared to UC's 14.3 percent (4-of-28).  A key stretch during the opening half of play took place over a 5:30 span when an 11-0 Emory run, with four different players scoring, extended a six-point lead into a 22-5 cushion with 7:21 left.  Later on in the stanza, Emory held UC scoreless for nearly a five-minute stretch while rattling off 11 unanswered, four by Davis and a triple by Greven to balloon its lead to 33-6.

The Maroons cut the deficit to 19 points, 44-25, with 15:15 left in the game, but a 12-0 Eagle blitz, with Greven contributing five points, enabled them to claim a 56-25 margin with 12:03 left on the clock.  Emory would eventually lead by as many as 39 points, 77-38, with 4:00 remaining.  All 16 Emory players who suited up played with 10 finding their way into the scoring column with 12 grabbing rebounds.

Emory returns to action next Friday (Jan. 18) when it plays at Case Western.
