Emory Volleyball Splits Tuesday Night Matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The No. 6-ranked Emory volleyball team  concluded a six-match homestand Tuesday evening by splitting a pair of contests.  The Eagles opened with a 3-2 (25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 15-6) decision over Birmingham Southern before dropping a 3-1 verdict to NAIA power Lee University (24-26, 25-16, 20-25, 22-25).  Emory now stands 16-3 on the campaign.

With Emory sitting out senior Breanah Bourque and sophomore Kate Bowman in the nightcap vs. Lee, the Eagles concluded that contest hitting .184 (55-25—163) compared to the Flames' mark of .195 (55-22—169).  Emory finished with a slight 77-74 edge in the digs department and was paced by freshman Taylor Erwin's 23 defensive saves, her sixth out of 20 or more digs this season.  Sophomore Leah Jacobs stepped up and led the team's offensive effort with a career-high 13 kills, one of four Eagles who finished in double digits.  Sophomore Cami Silverman and senior Alex Duhl each contributed a dozen kills in the cause  while sophomore Hannah Everett  came through with a big effort, knocking down a career-high 10 kills and finishing with a .471 hitting percentage (10-2—17).   Sophomore Dana Holt tied her career best with 41 assists and came up with a season-high 16 digs.

In the match against BSC, Bourque led a quarter of Eagles who finished with double-digit terminations with 17 kills while also racking up a match-high five total blocks.  Kate Bowman chalked up 14 terminations along with 13 digs, her 10th double-double of the season.  Alex Duhl and sophomore Cat McGrath each registered 10 kills with Duhl finishing with a .400 attack percentage (10-2—20) and three total blocks.  Freshman Sydney Miles dished out 41 assists over four sets of action while Erwin helped Emory to a 90-73 advantage in digs with a match-best 25 defensive saves.   For the match, Emory hit .183 (62-29—180) compared to the Panthers' effort of .101.  After the Eagles saw a 2-0 match lead evaporate with BSC capturing the third and fourth sets, they dominated the fifth and deciding game,  hitting a blazing .615 (9-1—13).   Kills by Bourque and Holt, combined with a service ace by Silverman, enabled Emory to race out to a 5-1 advantage.  After a point by BSC, the Eagles went on a 6-0 spurt, keyed by a pair of terminations by Duhl, to claim an insurmountable 11-2 lead.

Emory will now turn its attention to the University Athletic Association Round Robin I this Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 29-30) hosted by the University of Chicago.   The Eagles will tangle with NYU (10:30 am, CDT) and Carnegie Mellon (2:30 pm, CDT) on Saturday before closing out the weekend on Sunday with a bout against Chicago (noon, CDT).
