No. 14 Emory Women's Basketball Wears Down Oglethorpe

Box Score

–  Sparked by 13 points apiece by junior Hannah Lilly and senior Misha Jackson, the No. 14-raned Emory women's basketball team remained unbeaten Wednesday evening with a victory over crosstown foe Oglethorpe University.  The Eagles boosted their record to 8-0 following a 69-41 victory over the Stormy Petrels who slumped to 2-5.

Emory ended the game shooting 38.0 percent (27-of-71) from the floor compared to Oglethorpe's mark of 36.6 percent (15-of-41).   While both teams shot relatively the same field goal percentage, Emory posted a significant 43-27 bulge on the glass, 21-3 on the offensive end that led to a 26-2 advantage in second-chance points.  As has been the case throughout the season, a hard-nosed Emory defense constantly disrupted the opposing offense, tonight forcing 25 OU turnovers.   The Eagles recorded 15 steals, with six players finishing with two thefts, which helped the squad enjoy a 25-10 margin in points off turnovers.

Jackson converted six-of-11 from the floor en route to registering her team-high tying seventh double-figure scoring effort of the season. In addition, she led all players with 13 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season.  Though she scored just five points, junior Savannah Morgan turned in another steady floor game with five assists and no turnovers in 29 minutes.  In her last five performances, Morgan has doled out 30 assists with just two miscues.

Jackson and Lilly scored 11 and nine points, respectively, in the first half in helping Emory build a 36-25 edge at halftime.   The Eagles were nursing a 23-19 lead with 4:43 left in the stanza before closing out with a 13-6 run, capped by a triple by Lilly,  to stake themselves to the 11-point bulge.

After a trey by OU's Ali Bleckley drew the Petrels to with 10 points early in the second half,  Emory rattled off a 14-4 blitz, with the first five points coming from sophomore O'Dez Oraedu and the last four from junior Selena Castillo,  to jump out to a 54-34 lead with 9:20 left in the contest.   The closest OU would get from the point was 15 points with 7:33 on the clock but the Eagles closed out the final 6:51 by scoring 14 of the game's final 15 points, highlighted by a pair of three pointers by junior Marissa Resnick and one from Katie Dickerson.

Emory returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 8) when it plays at Maryville College in a 3:00 pm start.
