Box Score 2 The No. 3-ranked Emory University volleyball team captured first
place at the Maryville College Tournament on Sunday following a
pair of victories on the final day of action. The Eagles had
to rally for a 3-2 triumph against Mount St. Joseph (23-25, 25-21,
23-25, 25-20, 15-14) before notching a decisive 3-0 decision over
host Maryville (25-18, 25-14, 25-14). Emory battled to a 4-0
record over the weekend and upped its overall slate to 5-0 on the
season.
Senior Amelia McCall and junior Jessica McAlvany led the
Eagles' offensive effort in the Mount St. Joseph affair,
blasting away for 19 and 18 kills, respectively. Junior
Natalie Schonefeld doled out 51 assists and totaled 11 digs to aid
in the win while freshman Sarah Taub was credited with 18 digs.
Sophomore Breanah Bourque led the team's way against the
Scots of Maryville, hitting a blazing 57.1 percent with 13
terminations and just one error in 21 attempts. McCall racked
up a dozen successful attacks and finished with a 37.0 hitting
percentage (12-2—27), and also topped the squad with 13 digs,
while McAlvany rounded out the double-digit producers in that
category with 11 kills.
McCall was named the MVP of the Tournament while Bourque earned
all-tournament recognition.
Emory returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 7) when it plays at the
University of West Georgia.
