Box Score 2 In a match between two of Division III's top-ranked teams,
the Emory volleyball squad came up short against No. 1 Washington
University in the opening game of the University Athletic
Associaiton Round Robin II in Waltham, Mass. The Bears upped
their overall record to 22-0 (4-0 UAA) following a 25-22, 18-25,
17-25, 25-21, 15-6 come-from-behind decision against the Eagles who
slipped to 17-4 overall (3-1 UAA).
After a closely played first set that saw Wash U., pull
away from a 20-20 tie, Emory, ranked No. 2, regained it focus and
dominated the second and third games. The Eagles never
trailed in sets two and three, leading at one point, 20-9 in the
second set and 10-3 early in the fourth game. The Bears
wrestled back some momentum in the fourth set, allowing Emory to
have the lead on just one occasion at 5-4. Trailing by a
15-11 count, the Eagles battled back to tie the game at 17-17 and
trailed by just one point at 21-22 before the Bears recorded the
set's final three points to force a fifth game.
In the fifth set, the Eagles held a 4-3 advantage, before Wash U.,
responded with a 7-1 run that gave it a 10-5 edge. After the
Eagles cut the gap to four points, the Bears rattled off five
unanswered points to close out the match.
Emory continues play in the Round Robin II on Saturday when it
takes on Rochester in a scheduled 2:30 p.m. start.
