The No. 3-ranked Emory University volleyball team posted a pair of
wins on the opening day of action at the Emory Tournament.
The Eagles raised their mark to 13-2 on the year following 3-0 wins
against Thomas More College (25-14, 25-18, 25-18) and Washington
& Lee University (25-19, 25-20, 25-18).
Junior Amelia McCall and senior Alysse Meyer led the offensive
attack in the Thomas More encounter, combining for 24 of the team's
49 kills. McCall racked up a match-high 14 terminations, as
well as hitting an impressive 50 percent (14-2-24), while Meyer
recorded 10 put-aways. Sophomores Jessica McAlvany and
Alexandra Wright each chipped in eight kills with McAlvany coming
up with 12 digs and Wright with three blocks. For the match,
Emory hit 28.3 percent (49-13-127) compared to TMC's .087 percent
(26-16-115).
Wright continued her steady play in the following match against
Washington & Lee, chalking up a match-high 10 kills while
finishing with three blocks. Meyer was next high on the club
with eight kills. Senior Vista Murphy sparked a fine
defensive effort with 18 digs. Sophomore Natalie
Schonefeld doled out 29 assists and added 11 digs in the
contest. The Eagles concluded the match with a 21.4 attack
percentage while the Generals tallied a 12.0 percent effort
(29-17-100).
Emory continues play on Saturday when it entertains Lynchburg
College at 1:00 p.m. and Shorter College at 3:30.
