For the second time in program history, the Emory University women's soccer team is headed to the national championship as the Eagles ousted Tufts University, 3-0, in the national semifinals Thursday night at Donald Kerr Stadium on the campus of Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia.
Sophomore
Mikayla Camp and junior
Madison Teng shined on the evening, combining for Emory's three goals in the shutout win. The Eagles improve their record to 21-1-1 on the season and collect their 18th shutout of the season.
Following her standout weekend during the sectional round where she scored three of the team's four goals, Camp picked up right where she left off with another highlight reel game to lead the Eagles in the semifinals. Within minutes after the opening kick, Camp netted her fourth goal of the postseason as she put the Eagles in front 1-0 at the 3:10 mark. Freshman
Sophia Asiain sent a great cross into the box that was headed down by sophomore
Emory Bozzuti. Camp corralled the loose ball and punch it home from close range.
The score remained 1-0 at the halftime break with both teams seeing limited offensive chances as the sides combined for six shots total.
In the second half, the Eagles added to their tally in the 59th minute. Emory forced a turnover in their offensive end and Teng settled the ball before taking two steps and firing shot to the top right corner and bouncing off the post and in.
Camp put the finishing touches on the win in the 73rd minute, scoring her 13th goal of the season in beautiful fashion. Junior
Kaitlyn Nimmer put a ball in the center of the field to Camp which in turn allowed her to do the rest, ripping a shot from 25 yards out and past the diving Jumbos keeper.
The Eagles outshot Tufts 14-10 in the win while the Jumbos had the edge in shots on goal, 5-4. Senior
Sophia Garcia made three of her four saves in the second half to preserve the shutout.
The season will come down to the national championship game Saturday afternoon as Emory is set to battle fellow University Athletic Association foe, WashU, as the Bears bounced conference mate UChicago, 10-9 after 14 rounds of penalty kicks. The Eagles will look to avenge their lone loss of the season as well as win the program's first-ever national title when kickoff gets underway at 12:00 PM in Salem.
