The No. 2 ranked Emory women's soccer team took down No. 5 CWRU 1-0 Saturday afternoon on the road, earning their fourth conference win to advance to 15-1-1 on the season.
This was the sixth win against a ranked opponent for the Eagles and their 12
th shutout win on the season. It's also the 19
th season in program history where the Eagles have recorded ten or more shutout wins on the season.
The lone goal for Emory was scored late in the second half by sophomore
Emory Bozzuti as she found the back of the net in the 81
st minute thanks to an assist from junior
Katie Hungness.
It was a battle from the start as the Spartans put up a pair of shots in the third minute, but the Eagles were unfazed as
Kaitlyn Nimmer got a piece of it in the 13
th minute in a blocked shot attempt. CWRU tried to get in the net again in the 22
nd minute, but senior goalie
Sophia Garcia got the save to stop the Spartans' momentum.
The action continued as the Spartans and the Eagles both put up shots on goal in the 30
th minute within 28 seconds of each other. Both shots were saved, leaving the game scoreless going into the second half.
The Eagles came out swinging to start the second half as Nimmer and grad student
Claudia Schmidt both put up shots in the 51
st and 52
nd minute. Nimmer shined as she recorded five of the teams seven shots in the second half.
Garcia was a defensive force for the Eagles as the senior put up five of her seven saves in the second half.
The Eagles capitalized on the Spartans dwindling momentum as they missed three shots in the minutes leading up to Bozzuti's goal in the final minutes of the game. The energy shifted the Eagles way as CWRU only put up one shot the rest of the match to give the Eagles their fourth conference win on the season.
The Eagles will be back on the road next weekend to end the regular season as they take on Rochester.
