#1 Women's Soccer Hands #3 UChicago First Defeat; Topples Maroons, 1-0

The first of two highly touted women's soccer matches in Atlanta this weekend lived up to the hype as the No. 1 ranked Emory Eagles defeated the No. 3 ranked Chicago Maroons, 1-0, Friday night at the WoodPEC.

The top-ranked Eagles handed the Maroons their first loss of the season as UChicago fell to 11-1-2 overall. With the win, Emory extends its unbeaten streak to 15 consecutive matches, improving to 14-0-1, and recorded its seventh consecutive shutout to match the longest such streak in program history. The Eagles' 15-match unbeaten streak is the third-longest streak in team history.

A defensive battled emerged Friday night between the highly-ranked UAA foes with limited scoring chances between the two offenses.

The Maroons opened the game with the first four attempts within the first 17 minutes before the Eagles started to mount their own offensive threats. Emory's third attempt of the game resulted in a goal when junior Zia Tomlin sent a cross to the middle, narrowly missing a UC defender and finding the foot of a streaking Katie Hungness for the goal in the 39th minute.

The second half saw the momentum shift towards the Maroons as the visitors compiled 11 shots including four on frame over the final 45 minutes. Junior Kaitlyn Nimmer had the Eagles best scoring threat of the second half when she slipped between two defenders and had a one-on-one chance with the keeper but was turned away.

Chicago threatened with its best chance of the night in the 62nd minute when senior Sophia Garcia made an outstanding stop on the Maroons initial attempt. The rebound gave UC another attempt on frame but junior Jessica Nastasi came up with the sliding save off the line to preserve the lead.

Offsides calls were the theme of the night as the Eagles were called for offsides 11 times in the game. None loomed larger though than in the 82nd minute when Chicago thought it had the equalizer with a header inside the six but the goal was wiped off the board with the side flag raised.

The No. 1 ranked Eagles will have another strong test on Sunday when No. 2 WashU visits Atlanta for a 1:30 PM showdown. Prior to the start of the match, Emory will honor its seven-member senior class.
