Emory Athletics Weekly Preview: September 24 - September 30

The Emory Athletics weekly preview for September 24th through September 30th. This preview is to serve as a weekly snapshot of all upcoming athletic events for the coming week.

Men's Soccer:
The Emory men's soccer team (3-4-1) is in the home stretch of its non-conference schedule, with just two bouts left before they head into UAA-play. The Eagles are coming off a week in which they went 1-1 with a win over Sewanee before falling in the late moments of the game against Covenant this past weekend. They'll play just one game this week, with Brevard next on the docket.

The Eagles' offense has not shied away from taking chances on net. The Eagles are taking nearly 15 shots per game, but the chances have not always been on target. Should Emory be able to take more shots on net, the Eagles will be a dangerous offense heading into UAA-play.

Head coach Cory Greiner hit the transfer portal this offseason and one newcomer has stood out. Graduate transfer Ryan Winkler, who spent four years at Princeton, leads the team in goals with four. Winkler has hit his stride as of late, scoring three goals in his last three games. Junior captain Josh Grand has helped spark the offense, putting his teammates in positions to score. Grand has racked up a career-high five assists already this year, four of which coming in his last four games.

The Eagles' backline has performed well as of late, holding opponents to just one goal per game over their last five matches. The defense has limited opponents' chances, holding them to just over nine shots per game. Junior Keirnan Skelly has racked up 18 saves this year as the Emory goalkeeper.

Brevard will prove to be an interesting test for the Eagles, as the Tornados offense has been red-hot as of late. The Tornados have scored 19 goals over their last four, including a 10-goal game against Warren Wilson earlier this month. This gives the Tornados the fifth ranked scoring offense in the country heading into the week, averaging 3.83 goals per game. The offense has been willing to share the wealth as well, averaging 3.33 assists per game, tied for fifth in the country.

The matchup with Brevard will also be a matchup of last year's NCAA Tournament First Round, a game in which the Eagles won, 3-0. This is just the third time the two teams will meet, and the first time Emory will play at Brevard's Ives-Lemel Family Field. The game will kickoff at 5:00 PM on Wednesday.

When/Where:
  • Wednesday, September 25th – at Brevard – 5:00 PM – Ives-Lemel Family Field (Brevard, NC)

Women's Tennis:
The Emory women's tennis team is set to travel to Mount Berry, Georgia to compete in the ITA South Regional this weekend. The regional event will see a regional winner in both singles and doubles crowned to earn an automatic bid to the ITA Cup, which takes place in mid-October.

The Eagles got their season started last weekend when they took part in the Western Carolina Fall Invitational. Emily Kantrovitz kicked off her junior campaign in dominant fashion, winning two of her three singles matches, including a win against NCAA Division I's Gardner Webb. She also saw her first doubles action of the year alongside graduate transfer Dakota Fordham. Fordham picked up her first singles win of her Emory career as well, taking a win over Gardner Webb as well. Juniors Izzy Antanavicius and Iris Berman were impressive as a doubles tandem as well, winning all three of their matches.

Head coach Bridget Disher will get her first glimpse at a pair of freshmen this weekend, with Rachel Hernandez and Daniela Livson likely to get their collegiate careers underway at the ITA Regional.

The Eagles saw a good deal of success at last year's ITA Regional, with Kantrovitz winning the singles crown as well as finishing as runner-up in doubles play alongside Ana Cristina Perez. Kantrovitz will hit the court looking to defend her title this weekend.

The ITA Regional will be held at the Rome Tennis Center in Mount Berry, Georgia, and span Saturday through Monday.

Men's Tennis:
The Emory men's tennis team will see its first competition of the fall this weekend as they also get set to compete at the ITA South Regional. The regional event will see a regional winner in both singles and doubles crowned to earn an automatic bid to the ITA Cup, which takes place in mid-October.

The Eagles are coming off a year in which they reached the National Quarterfinals, where they narrowly fell to Middlebury, 5-4. While they fell short in the NCAA Tournament, the Eagles did claim the ITA National Indoor Championships, taking down some of the nation's top teams in dominant fashion.

While the Eagles have yet to compete officially this season, Head Coach John Browning is returning a few key members of last year's team. Namely, junior Dean Kamenev who brings a history of winning to the ITA Regional. Kamenev claimed last year's regional doubles title before finishing as runner-up in the singles draw. Kamenev received an at-large bid to the ITA Cup after his regional performance and finished as the national runner-up in the event.

Sophomore Christian Liew is also back after an impressive rookie season. The sophomore was dominant in dual matches last year, playing a key role in the Eagles' win at the ITA National Indoor Championships last spring. As a rookie, he was recognized as Second Team All-UAA in No. 5 singles as well as being named a conference Athlete of the Week twice.

The ITA Regional will be held at the Rome Tennis Center in Mount Berry, Georgia, and span Saturday through Monday.

Volleyball:
After a dominating start to its season, the No. 6 ranked Emory Volleyball team (11-1) will head to the first UAA Round Robin of the season in New York, New York. The Eagles are coming off yet another unblemished weekend with wins over Covenant, Berry, and a straight-set win over #22 Centre.

The Eagles are among the nation's most well-rounded teams, ranking in the top 35 nationally in kills per set, assists per set, and blocks per set. The Eagles are not just handling business, but they're doing so against some of the nation's top teams. The Eagles own a 4-1 record against ranked opponents this season, with their lone loss of the season coming to now-ranked #2 Johns Hopkins.

Leading the way for the offense are senior Madison Cail and sophomore Sophia Luo, who have racked up 106 and 103 kills, respectively. Cail ranks third among all UAA players in kills per set with 3.50 and second in hitting percentage with a mark of .431. She has also gotten it done defensively, sitting second in the conference in blocks per set with 0.98. Junior Olivia Rabinowitz has also garnered recognition for her efforts this season, earning the UAA's Setter/Defensive Athlete of the Week award earlier this week. She has racked up 240 assists this year, the fifth-most in the UAA.

The Eagles will get their first UAA event started with a match against No. 9 ranked WashU on Saturday morning. The Bears are off to a 12-2 start and have won 11 straight matches. Like the Eagles, the Bears are a well-rounded team as they rank in the top-20 in most offensive metrics and still manage to compile nearly two blocks per set. The Bears kept their winning streak going this past weekend with three wins, including one over a ranked opponent in No. 15 ranked Gustavus Adolphus. The Bears have one of the nation's top setters in junior Sam Buckley. The junior was a First Team All-UAA winner last year while also being named an All-America Honorable mention. She has picked up right where she left off, compiling 583 assists this year to average 11.21 per set. Emory has historically struggled against WashU, owning a record of 19-52 against the Bears. However, the Eagles have won nine of the last 10 meetings dating back to 2017.

They'll then shift their attention to Rochester later that day. After stumbling out of the gate, the Yellowjackets are off to a 6-7 start to their season. Yet, they're starting to put things together as of late, having won five of their last six matches coming into UAA play. Rochester is led by junior Rylee Bergeron and senior Alexia Nelms. Nelms has put Bergeron in a position to succeed this season, racking up 6.57 assists per set while Bergeron has compiled 145 kills this year. The Eagles are 34-14 against the Yellowjackets all-time.

Emory will wrap up their round robin with a tilt against No. 21 ranked Case Western Reserve. The Spartans won 12 straight matches to start their season, but dropped their first of the season to #18 Marietta in straight sets this past weekend. The Spartans bring two very strong attackers in senior Rea Marfatia and junior Amanda Ngo, who both rank in the top 10 in the UAA in total kills. Senior Carly Scott has had a strong start to the season, as well with 412 assists already this year – the third most in the UAA. Emory has historically dominated the Spartans, owning a 47-3 record against them.

Each UAA team will travel to New York and compete at NYU's John A. Paulson Center. Emory will start with two matches on Saturday before wrapping up with Case Western Reserve on Sunday.

When/Where:
  • Saturday, September 28th – vs #9 WashU – 11:00 AM – John A. Paulson Center (New York, NY)
  • Saturday, September 28th – vs Rochester – 3:00 PM - John A. Paulson Center (New York, NY)
  • Sunday, September 29th – vs #21 Case Western Reserve – 12:00 PM - John A. Paulson Center (New York, NY)

The Emory Swimming and Diving teams will be back in action this weekend for the first time this fall as they get set to compete against local-foe and NCAA Division I opponent Georgia Tech.

The men's team is fresh off its third-consecutive National Championship and are returning some of the team's most prominent members in 2024-25. Namely, Crow Thorsen will return for his senior season after compiling five First Team All-America honors as well as his first-ever individual national title in the 400 IM. His brother, McKee Thorsen, also picked up a couple of First Team All-America honors of his own as a rookie in the 200 Fly and 800 Freestyle Relay. Additional First Team All-Americans returning include Dylan Yin, Liyang Sun, Jeff Echols, Caden Bjornstad, and Adam Braunschweig.

Returning is Junior Isabel Huang, who claimed four First-Team All-America awards last year. Megan Jungers is coming back for her graduate year after posting five All-America swims last year.
