Freshman Alexa Goetz and sophomore Christina Watson of the Emory University women's tennis team were honored by the University Athletic Association Monday afternoon by being chosen as the women's tennis Athletes of the Week following their performances at the ITA South Regional Championships.
Goetz and Watson became the 13th consecutive Emory doubles duo to win the regional, dispatching teammates Emma Cartledge and Defne Olcay 6-0, 6-1 in the championship match. After being pushed to a tiebreaker in the opening round, Goetz/Watson dominated the remaining matches of their run, dropping just five games total.
In singles, Goetz became the latest Eagle to capture the ITA South regional singles title, defeating Cartledge in the championship match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. The title match was the lone time during Goetz's singles run where she was pushed to three sets, winning her previous four matches via straight sets.
The duo now advances to the ITA Cup which will be held in Rome, GA from October 17th-20th.
