2006-07 Women's Tennis Season Recap

One taking a quick look at the Emory Women's Tennis roster at the beginning of the 2006-07 season might assume that the year would have been a rebuilding year for the Eagles.  With five of the team's eight players entering their freshman year in college, the average onlooker would expect a departure from the success the Eagles have exhibited in the past season.  And although the Eagles' streak of four-straight National Championships was broken during the season, it was another successful year for Emory, recording its 20th-consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship and making it to the NCAA South Regional Championship match.

The Eagles opened their fall season on a strong note, as senior captain and All-American Richelle Marasigan claimed victory at the singles tournament of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament, and advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Small College National Tournament.

During the spring season, it was the Eagles' youngsters who step up to help the team to a 14-9 overall record.  Freshman Sabra Rogers (no. 3 singles) and sophomore Jenny Moscato (no. 6 singles) each registered a team-leading 16 wins during the year, while freshman Tshema Nash and Kristen Hillock, playing out of the second and fourth singles spots respectively, each recorded 13 wins during the season.

The Eagles excelled in doubles play during the year, finishing the season with a combined 43-23 record.  Marasigan and Rogers teamed for a 13-9 record in the no. 1 doubles spot, Nash and Fick went 10-6 in the no. 2 doubles role, and the no. 3 doubles team of Hillock and Moscato finished 12-5.

Following a three-match sweep at the UAA Tournament, the Eagles' season culminated with a heartbreaking 5-4 defeat to the region-rival University of the South (Tenn.) in the South Regional Championship match, the second such loss of the season to the Tigers.

Marasigan and Nash both advanced to the NCAA Division III Singles Tournament, while the doubles team of Marasigan and Rogers were selected to compete at the NCAA Division III Doubles Tournament.
