Emory Softball Takes Two From Emory & Henry

Emory Softball Takes Two From Emory & Henry

Sophomore pitcher Madison Schaefer tossed a complete-game four-hitter in leading the Emory softball team to a second-game win game and a sweep of a Wednesday doubleheader against Emory and Henry College.  The Eagles registered a 2-1 come-from-behind decision over the Wasps in the nightcap, boosting their win streak to five games and improving their season record to 7-3.  Emory prevailed in the opener by a 7-4 margin.

Schaefer was touched for just one unearned run and fanned five in upping her season record to 3-1. She kept the Wasps in check by retiring the side in order in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings. Facing a 1-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the sixth, Natalie Arreguin started off the frame by reaching second base as a result of fielding error. Greta Wilker promptly delivered a single that scored Arreguin while advancing to second on the throw to the plate.  After moving to third following a sacrifice by sophomore Meghan Murphy, Wilker scored the go-ahead run when freshman Mattie Ryan came through with a sacrifice fly.

In the opener Murphy collected a pair of hits and drove in five runs to key the Eagles' offensive attack. Senior shortstop Cassie Baca hit safely twice and scored a pair of runs while Sarak Katz and Arreguin also crossed the plate twice.  Emory blitzed E&H with four runs in the bottom of the first with a two-run single by Murphy the key blow. Emory accounted for the rest of its scoring in its half of the fourth when Murphy cleared the bases with a triple. Senior hurler Toko Miller went the distance in notching her third win in as many decisions, surrendering 11 hits while striking out five.

Emory is scheduled to return to action on Friday when it hosts Rochester in a 2:30 pm start.
