2014-15 Emory Men’s Indoor Track & Field Season Recap

2014-15 Emory Men’s Indoor Track & Field Season Recap

With a strong balance of talented returning competitors and an infusion of freshman into the mix, the Emory University track and field team put together a solid campaign during the 2014-15 indoor season.

The Eagles ended the season ranked second in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South/ Southeast Regional Rankings.  In addition, Emory athletes ranked in the top-50 nationally in five different events during the year.

Emory was represented at the 2015 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships by junior Maxwell Hoberman.  Making his first career appearance at the NCAA Championships, Hoberman placed ninth in the triple jump at the meet with a mark of 14.08 meters.

Earlier in the season, Hoberman helped lead the Eagles to a third place finish at the University Athletic Association Indoor Championships, winning conference titles in both the long jump and the triple jump and becoming just the fourth athlete in Emory history to sweep the horizontal jumps at the meet.  A pair of freshman added on individual UAA Championships, with Benjamin Rogin winning the 60-meter dash, and Daniel Pietsch finishing first in the 400-meter dash.

Pietsch was later named the UAA Rookie of the Year, becoming the fourth Emory men's athlete overall to earn the honor during the indoor season, and the first since Ian Francis in 2009.

Also claiming individual all-UAA finishes at the meet were senior Scott Greathouse in the high jump and junior Adam Rabushka in the 400-meter dash, both with second-place finishes, and freshman Jordan Flowers with a third-place finish in the mile run.  Emory's distance medley relay team of Flowers, sophomore Ian McIsaac, freshman Max Brown and sophomore Grant Murphy finished second at the UAA Championships, setting a new school record of 10:09.62 in the process.

The Eagles scored 97 points during the meet, finishing behind Washington University (114 points) and the second-place University of Chicago (113 points).

Two other school records were set during the indoor season.  Murphy broke the previous program-best mark in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:35.99, while Brown set the new school record in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:29.73.  Both marks were set at the Samford Invitational in February.

In other scored meets during the season, Emory placed fifth out of 15 teams at the Birmingham Ice Breaker to open the season in December, second out of 21 teams at the Emory Crossplex Invitational in January, and second out of nine teams at the Tiger Indoor Invitational in February.

In addition to their accomplishments on the track, Murphy and junior Lukas Mees were named to the Capital One/ CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.  It marked the first such honor for both.
