Emory men's tennis player Antonio Mora has been recognized for his outstanding start during the fall portion of the schedule with his selection as the first Division III UTR/ITA National Player of the Month for September.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and the Universal Tennis and Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) Powered by Oracle are serving as the official title sponsor of a newly-instituted UTR/ITA National Player of the Month/Week Awards program that is debuting this fall.
Mora, a sophomore, played his way to both the singles and doubles titles, earning All-America status in the process, at the ITA South Region Championships, held Sept. 20-22 at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia. In singles, he registered six wins en route to that crown in the 64-player field. Mora bettered Andres Carro of Sewanee, 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals before defeating sophomore teammate Andrew Esses, 6-4, 6-1 in the finals.
Mora then teamed up with junior Will Wanner to win the doubles championship. The pair played their way to five wins in recording the No. 1 spot, battling to a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8) finals verdict over North Carolina Wesleyan's Roberto Puig, fighting off a 2-6 deficit in the tie breaker.
By virtue of their efforts at the ITA South Region Championships, both Mora and Wanner have earned spots in the ITA Cup that will be played Oct. 17-20 at the Rome Tennis Center.
The UTR/ITA national awards program will honor male and female individuals from all five divisions (NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and Junior College) beginning with monthly awards in the fall (September, October, November) and moving to a weekly award during the spring dual-match season. A total of 22 player of the month awards will be announced in the fall and 98 players of the week will be honored in the spring.
