The Emory University Women's Tennis team, fresh off its two-week trip to Thailand, debuted at No.-2 in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Rankings which were released Thursday afternoon.
In addition to occupying the second spot nationally, the Eagles have four players ranked inside the top-50 in singles led by freshman Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico (#2). Senior team captain Bridget Harding, who is seven singles wins shy of joining the 100-win club, is ranked seventh followed by junior Daniela Lopez (#28) and freshman Stephanie Taylor (T-50th).
Emory also has a pair of doubles tandems positioned inside the top-25 nationally with Harding and Gonzalez-Rico ranked second and Lopez and freshman Defne Olcay at the 21st position.
The Eagles, furthermore, were tabbed as the top team in the Atlantic South team rankings released on Thursday and claim three of the top-five singles players in the region: Gonzalez-Rico (#1), Harding (#2) and Lopez (#5). Joining the Emory trio in the Atlantic South singles top-20 are Taylor (#12) and Olcay (#18). In the doubles rankings, the Eagles own three of the top-10 spots with Gonzalez-Rico/Harding (#1), Lopez/Olcay (#6) and Taylor/sophomore Emma Perelman (#8).
Emory opens the spring season on February 10th against Division I's Georgia State University. The 2018 docket features fellow Division I foes Coastal Carolina (Feb. 11th), Charleston Southern (March 30th), Division II's Columbus State (Feb. 18th), Point Loma (March 24th), NAIA's Brenau (Feb. 22nd), SCAD (Feb. 25th) and nationally ranked Division III's programs #3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (March 25th), #23 DePauw University (March 31st), #5 Bowdoin College (April 6th), #14 Amherst University (April 7th) and #7 Tufts University (April 8th). The Eagles are also slated to defend their indoor national crown as the ITA National Indoor Championships takes place from March 2-4 in Chattanooga, TN.
