Emory University sophomore Gabrielle Clark claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win over teammate Malavika Padmanabhan in championship match of the singles draw at the USTA/ITA South Regional Championships, and later teamed with senior Zahra Dawson to earn an 8-3 win over teammates Jordan Wylie and Brenna Kelly to win the doubles title.
Clark was dominant in singles play throughout the tournament, losing just 14 games in her six matches and no more than three games in every match with the exception of the championship. It marked the first USTA/ITA Fall Singles title for the top-seed, who finished second in last year's tournament.
Clark's win marked the tenth-straight year that an Emory player has won the singles bracket, and the 13th time overall.
Dawson and Clark combined to drop just eight games, en route to the regional championship. The doubles title was the 11th in the program's history, and the fifth-straight by an Eagles' duo. Emory has now swept the ITA Regionals in each of the last five seasons.
Dawson becomes just the second player in school history to three-peat as a USTA/ITA Fall singles or doubles champion, joining former teammate Lorne McManigle, who Dawson won the doubles title with in 2009 and 2010.
By virtue of winning the USTA/ITA Fall Regional Championships, Clark and Dawson will both earn all-America honors.
Clark and Dawson will now advance to the USTA/ITA Small College Championships at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, AL from October 13th – 16th.
