The Emory men's tennis team received a title performance late Sunday afternoon as the junior doubles team of Jackson Isaacs (Culver City, CA) and Nick Szczurek (Lemont, IL) took home first place in the ITA Regional Championships.
With the doubles portion of the championship being moved indoor because of rain, Isaacs and Szczurek defeated a pair of seeded teams en route to claiming the title. In the semifinals, the tandem upended the No. 3 seeded team of Robert Kjellberg and Artsiom Protsak of North Carolina Wesleyan, 9-8, posting a 7-1 advantage in the tie-breaker. In a the finals Isaacs and Szczurek met No. 2 seed fellow Eagles Elliot Kahler and Ian Wagner, and came away with a 9-7 decision.
By virtue of their championship, Isaacs and Szczurek earn All-America honors and will advance to the ITA Small College Championships, Oct. 11-14, in Mobile, Alabama.
In singles action, NCWU's Kjellberg rallied for a dramatic 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory Emory sophomore Alex Ruderman. After seeing Ruderman dominate the first set, Kjellberg faced a 2-5 deficit in the second set before regrouping to win nine straight games that not only enabled him to capture the second set, but also bolt out to a 4-0 advantage in the deciding third set. After Ruderman narrowed the gap to 1-4, Kjellberg won the last two games to cement the decision. Ruderman had earned a spot in the singles final after topping Kahler, 6-1, 7-6, in the semis. Kjellberg defeated Emory's Eric Halpern in the semifinal round, 6-2, 7-5.
In the B singles action, junior Dylan Kady (Upper Holland, PA) nailed down first place with a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Nick Roby of Oglethorpe University. In doubles, Kady teamed with Tim Lam claim the top spot with the pair bettering Alex Minasyan and and James Keighley of Emory and Henry, 8-6.
